The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) aims to prevent the spread of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens through the control and management of ships' ballast water and sediments. The Convention requires ships to implement a ballast water management plan, maintain a ballast water record book, meet ballast water exchange or performance standards, use type-approved treatment systems, manage sediments, undergo surveys and certification, submit to port state control, provide reception facilities, and implement additional measures where required. The Convention applies to all ships carrying ballast water.
